The economic meltdown continues to slowly suck the growth out of the IT market, and the economists and market researchers at IDC have once again taken a sharp knife to their projections for IT spending in 2009. IDC's Black Book report now says that global IT spending will only increase by 0.5 per cent, to $1.44 trillion. This echoes comments made over at Gartner, which claims global IT spending will rise by the same 0.5 per cent in 2009, but to $2.68 trillion. Back in August, as the U.S. economy was still on the verge of collapse, IDC was projecting a 5.6 per cent increase in IT spending on a global basis, and , it trimmed that back to 2.6 per cent growth across all geographies and...

Podcast available through: If you like David Limbaugh, you might enjoy William Murchison Thomas Sowell Chuck Norris Remember when liberals were wringing their hands and accusing President George W. Bush of being a dictator and a king? Of course, that was breathtakingly absurd, but what's really ironic is that these people actually want a king, provided they get to pick him. As Barack Obama feverishly presses forward with his...

Dear Carolyn: My boyfriend is married. You can't imagine the scolding I've endured from my friends about this. Some of it is beginning to sink in, and I'm doubting whether he will end his marriage for me. In your opinion, if I am deeply in love with this man, is it worth the wait? Do you think he will cheat on me, too, because he's cheating on her? -- Philadelphia Dear Philadelphia: I see those as two separate questions: Should you wait, and, if...

Facebook made one of the most important announcements in the young company's history today. It has proposed a set of foundational documents, including the first official statement of Facebook Principles. The proposal is made to Facebook's users, who will now have 30 days to read, comment and perhaps vote on the documents. Looking just below the surface of this big news, though, there are a number of things going on that make absolutely no sense to us. Facebook's management appears to have lost its grip on reality. The population of Facebook dwarfs that of scores of countries in the physical world; these foundational documents are of immense importance and raise big red flags. We were on a...

Text: SAN FRANCISCO: US Internet firm Yahoo Inc is "not opposed" to doing a deal that would potentially sell its search business, Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen said on Wednesday. But he said the search business is deeply intertwined with Yahoo's other online products and properties, and so any deal, whether a partnership or a sale, would be done for the right reasons and the right economics. "It's extremely difficult to draw...

From the world's biggest phone maker, Nokia, to tiny Irish semiconductor start-up Movidia, delegates to the wireless industry's biggest annual gathering couldn't stop talking about Facebook, MySpace and Bebo. The majority of visits to such online communities are still made by people sitting at a computer telling their friends where they are and how they are feeling, exchanging opinions on their favourite movies and music or uploading videos. While IT spending is projected decline in some industries in 2009, the prognosticators at Gartner are thus far saying that despite the economic meltdown, IT spending across all industries and geographies will rise a tiny bit. Some industries and geographies are going to do better than others, of course. And there are some areas that are not going to see growth at all. Gartner this week put out a report called Dataquest Alert: Utilities, Healthcare and Government Lead IT Spending Growth in Challenging 2009, providing some dicing and slicing of IT spending with an industry and regional flavor, in contrast with to the traditional high-level IT spending projections Gartner, IDC, Forrester, and...
